Upside Down House | Midlothian

This site of this self-build house in Midlothian slopes down towards the views but the best of the light comes from the opposite direction.

This led to a simple design diagram in section, which places the living space on the upper level, capturing the light from above and making the most of the views to the front.

In plan, the design is generated by an equally simple diagram, putting service spaces at the back, entering through the centre and optimising connections with the garden.

These diagrams lead in-turn to a architectural expression based on a series of distinct building elements passing each-other and interacting in playful ways.
