Oblò Bar & Bistro | Eyemouth

Existing Building

Design Proposal

Oblò is an award winning Style Bar and Bistro situated on the harbour front of Eyemouth in the Scottish Borders. WS Giacopazzi & Son is a forward looking family business, established in 1898 and now making a distinctive contribution to Eyemouth’s Old Town.

Needing additional space for their award winning ice cream manufacturing business, which shares the premises with a fish and chip restaurant on the ground floor and their popular Oblo bistro at first floor level, the only option was to extend outwards by purchasing land adjacent to Manse Road from Scottish Borders Council.

A single storey kitchen extension would have been anonymous and would not have contributed to the street scene, so the opportunity was seized to extend the Bistro on the first floor into a conservatory and an open balcony, to serve growing local and harbour visitor demand.

Manse Road is relatively undistinguished architecturally, being a 1960’s creation, designed to relieve harbour commercial traffic, so something “bright and shiny” and unashamedly modern immediately seemed appropriate, to sit alongside the lively 2003 Oblo frontage, to create a focus of visual incident by day and sparkle and vitality at night and generally to celebrate the buildings purpose and project its wares.
