The project is a bespoke family house in the hamlet of Hume. A part of the house is built onto an existing partly finished foundation and the site is a boundary is a rockface and a dense tree belt screening Hume Castle. The design approach with regards to the building is to respect the immediate context, and historic fabric of Hume; whilst providing a contemporary living environment.
Traditional materials and form are used as the basis for this modern vernacular style single-storey house with split levels. The modern aspect of the form is focused on the most discreet area of the site. Large areas of glazing address the private garden area; connecting the inside of the house with the beautiful setting.
The design seeks to respect and compliment the surrounding vernacular in terms of form, scale and materiality. The existing stone wall remains a key element of the new building, forming part of the outer building skin. Quality traditional materials are used within a modern application. This includes powder-coated steel roof, timber cladding, and natural stone. The windows and doors are modern in nature; aluminium composite. The timber cladding, steel and stone form the main body of the house; the traditional base. The contemporary window and door openings complement the traditional body and express the nature of the modern interior of the house. An air-source heat pump was implemented as part of the heating strategy and allowance was made for PV panels to be installed as an array in the future.
