Gable Manners | Edinburgh

This stone farmhouse on the outskirts of Edinburgh is bordered by a railway line to the South and a complex of former steadings to the North.

The intersecting roof pitches and robust gables of the adjacent buildings provided a set of geometric cues for the design of a kitchen extension and a new garage.

These forms are translated into a contemporary architectural language: crisp zinc roofs and ribbon-like coping stones make reference to the vernacular without mimicry.

A set of rooflights in the pitch of the extension ensure that South light is drawn into the kitchen and dining room throughout the year, while a string of bi-fold doors allow the spaces to fully open onto the garden.
