How BIM is Shaping Our Work at CSY Architects
At CSY Architects, we’re always on the lookout for ways to add more value, creativity, and efficiency to our projects. Over the past two years, we’ve been on an exciting journey to integrate Building Information Modelling (BIM) into our practice. This process is changing how we design and manage buildings, no matter their size.
Curious about how BIM could benefit your next project? Here’s a look at our journey, including a unique collaboration that shaped our approach and why it matters to you as our clients.

What is BIM?
BIM, or Building Information Modelling, is a digital process that ultimately makes designing and managing building projects more efficient. It’s more than just creating plans or 2D drawings; it’s about building a smart 3D model packed with data. This model, and associated storage platform, act as a central hub of information that means everyone involved—from architects to contractors—can access.
Here’s why BIM makes a difference:
- Clearer Communication: Everyone works from the same up-to-date information, reducing misunderstandings.
- Fewer Surprises: BIM helps us spot and fix potential issues (like a beam clashing with a window frame) long before construction starts.
- A Lasting Resource: The BIM model isn’t just for the design phase; it’s a digital tool that supports maintenance, or upgrades in the future.
At every stage of your project, BIM helps us make better decisions, avoid errors, and achieve better results for your projects.

A Game-Changing Collaboration: The KTP
In 2022, CSY Architects embarked on a collaborative venture with Edinburgh Napier University through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP). A KTP is a government-supported program designed to promote collaboration between Industry and academia to support innovation and drive business development.
This partnership came about during a pivotal moment for us: the merging of three established architecture practices into one unified company. This merger definitely brought new opportunities and challenges. Each office had its own systems, workflows, and skill sets, making it tricky to harmonise our operations. The KTP’s mission was to develop a unified approach to managing projects, communication, and growth across all our offices. And BIM really became the cornerstone of this effort, allowing us to provide a clear structure for organising workflows, improving collaboration, and laying the foundation for achieving our business goals.
A Knowledge Transfer Partnership Success Story: Edinburgh Napier University and CSY Architects
Here’s what the KTP looked like in practice:
- Rethinking Systems: We analysed every aspect of our work, finding new ways to align our processes with BIM principles. This meant creating systems that allowed information to flow seamlessly between teams, no matter where they were located.
- Exploring New Tools: With help from our KTP associate, James King, and ENU’s experts, we integrated new BIM tools that streamlined how we design and manage projects.
- Industry Engagement: We hosted events to share insights and collaborate with others in the industry, refining our approach and building connections with like-minded professionals.
- Focusing on Clients: Everything we learned was aimed at delivering better outcomes for our clients. Whether it was improving the accuracy of designs or enhancing communication with project stakeholders, the KTP ensured our BIM approach stayed practical, and client focused.
This partnership wasn’t just about adopting new technology—it was about transforming how we think, work, and deliver value as architects.

BIM at CSY Architects
While BIM is often associated with large, complex projects, we’ve found its benefits are just as impactful on smaller ones. At CSY Architects, we’ve taken a proportional approach to BIM, scaling its application to fit the needs of each project.
Here’s how BIM is shaping our work:
- Streamlined Workflows: By consolidating all project information into a single platform, we’ve made it easier to collaborate with engineers, contractors, and consultants, but most importantly Internally as a team!
- Enhanced Precision: BIM lets us test ideas, optimise designs, and catch potential errors early, ensuring your project is efficient and well-executed.
- Future-Proof Designs: The digital model we create isn’t just a snapshot of your building during the design phase—it’s a resource you can use for years to come, whether for maintenance or future renovations.
This approach allows us to deliver the benefits of BIM without overcomplicating smaller projects, ensuring every client sees the value.

What This Means for Your Projects
Whether you’re planning a home extension, a new build, or a renovation, our commitment to BIM is all about making your project smoother, smarter, and better. This is more than technology—it’s about creating a process that fosters clear communication, thoughtful design, and efficient collaboration.
The KTP taught us that innovation doesn’t mean losing sight of what matters most: your vision as clients and delivering exceptional results.
Curious about how BIM could shape your next project? Let’s start a conversation. At CSY Architects, we’re excited to show how this cutting-edge approach can bring your ideas to life.
